Porter’s French Wash finish on a library ceiling in Dural, Sydney

A broken-colour finish with a different character from flat paint

Porter’s French Wash creates a softly broken colour effect over Porter’s Low Sheen Acrylic. The decorative layer is worked by hand with a muslin rag, so colour variation and the applicator’s technique are part of the finished appearance. It is an interior finish, rather than a conventional uniform wall paint. Discuss whether you prefer subtle movement or a stronger contrast before the coating system and colours are agreed.

Walls, ceilings and the way the room is lit

A feature wall can introduce texture without changing every room.

French Wash can also be considered for a dining room, study or ceiling where access and the substrate suit the work. Look at the proposed colour beside retained flooring, curtains, cabinetry and adjoining paint. Daylight and side lighting can change how the effect reads; a photograph is a reference, rather than a promise of an identical result.

Preparation and application are priced separately

We assess existing paint, repairs, surface soundness and access before quoting. Floors and retained fittings need protection, and cracks or staining must be assessed before decorative work begins. The base coat and French Wash application are distinct stages. An unresolved leak, loose coating or unstable surface needs attention first. Application follows the current Porter’s specification, with work planned to natural wall boundaries to maintain consistency.

French Wash or interior Lime Wash?

French Wash uses a Low Sheen Acrylic base and a rag-worked decorative layer. Porter’s Interno Lime Wash is a separate interior lime-based coating with brushed tonal variation. The two finishes do not use the same application system. If you are choosing between them, compare the appearance, room use and maintenance requirements, then confirm the proposed finish in the quote. Our guides and interior Lime Wash service page explain the alternatives.

Request a French Wash painting quote in Sydney

Send Victor your suburb, wide room photographs, wall dimensions or ceiling details, the existing surface condition and any reference colours.

Tell us whether the room will be empty or occupied and when you would like the work completed. A site inspection helps confirm access, preparation, the decorative system and any requested sample work. The written quote identifies the agreed surfaces, preparation, materials and application; availability and timing are confirmed for the project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can French Wash be applied over an already painted wall?

It may be suitable once the existing surface has been assessed and correctly prepared. Adhesion, gloss, repairs and the required base coat affect the scope. Decorative paint should not be used to conceal loose coatings or an unresolved moisture problem.

Is French Wash the same as Lime Wash?

No. Porter’s French Wash is a decorative layer over Low Sheen Acrylic, worked with muslin. Porter’s Interno Lime Wash is a separate brushed interior coating. We discuss the look you want before specifying either system.

Can I match a photograph exactly?

A photograph helps communicate a colour palette and degree of movement, but lighting, surface texture and hand application affect the result. Discuss a sample and its cost before approving the finish for a larger area.

What affects the price of French Wash painting?

Surface condition, area, ceiling or high-wall access, protection, the selected base and decorative colours, and any sample work all affect the quote. A simple feature wall and a detailed ceiling require different allowances.

Can French Wash be used in a wet area or on cabinetry?

Suitability needs a separate assessment. Do not assume a decorative wall finish is a waterproofing system or a hard-wearing cabinetry coating. Tell Victor about splash exposure and cleaning requirements so the application can be checked against the manufacturer’s specification.
