Deck restoration starts with the existing surface
We assess the timber, existing coating and exposed areas before recommending the scope of work. Preparation can include cleaning, sanding, removing loose coating and dust removal before a suitable finish is applied. Peeling paint, greying timber and a previously oiled surface can need different preparation, so the quote should reflect your deck rather than a one-size-fits-all coating package.
Choosing a finish and planning maintenance
The choice between oil, stain and paint depends on the existing finish, the timber’s condition and the look you want.
Tell us whether you want to retain a timber appearance or change the colour. We discuss preparation and coating options before work begins, including any limitations caused by the previous coating. Maintenance depends on the selected product, exposure and use; we do not promise the same recoating interval for every deck.
Hornsby deck sanding and oiling: the preparation behind the finish
Our Hornsby deck was newly built, but rain marks and site foot traffic during a five-to-six-month exterior project meant it needed a full re-sand before finishing. We sanded the entire deck again and thoroughly removed the sanding dust. The first coat of Cutek CD50 Timber Oil followed that preparation; the second was applied 24 hours later. This was the sequence for that project, not a fixed preparation or drying schedule for every deck. The project gallery records the surface, preparation and finished boards.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a weathered timber deck be restored?
Weathered surfaces may be suitable for cleaning, sanding and recoating, but the timber needs to be assessed first. Loose, rotten or structurally damaged boards may need repair or replacement before coating. We can discuss what is included in the painting scope after inspecting the deck.
How often will my deck need maintenance?
There is no single interval for every deck. Sun exposure, moisture, foot traffic and the coating system affect maintenance. Follow the selected product’s care instructions and check the surface regularly so maintenance can be planned before significant deterioration.
Does a deck restoration quote include sanding, stairs and handrails?
Ask for each item to be stated in the scope. Share the approximate deck dimensions, photographs of the boards and existing finish, and whether stairs or handrails are included. Removing a previous coating and restoring marked timber can require different preparation from a maintenance recoat. Victor can assess the surface before confirming the preparation and finish.
Will my deck receive the same two-coat sequence as the Hornsby project?
The Hornsby deck received its first coat after a full re-sand and dust removal, with the second coat applied 24 hours later. Your deck needs its own assessment: the selected coating, timber condition and application conditions determine preparation, recoating and when the surface can be used.
